Glowing Greenham

Glowing Greenham, GG, is a project that focuses on the sustainable nightlife rewilding. It spreads across 1000 acres in Newbury, Berkshire to restore the wildlife of a former Royal Air Force station. It should integrate the accommodation of 10 families’ small holdings and a research facility area.   

GG is a research-based project, developing MIT’s study on engineering luminesce plants. Fireflies’ enzymes were embedded into the tobacco plants’ leaves, which act on a molecule called luciferase, resulting in the plant glowing. 

The aim of this research’s development is to discover how to transfer this know-how on local plants and detect methods to intensify the light they emit. Introducing this technology to site will substitute many of the functions performed by electrical devices indoors as well as outdoors, hence reducing energy consumption. 

The form, shape and materials within the design have been considered and selected in response to natural light, atmospheric conditions and the natural landscape. 

The design of GG worked with the existing natural topography that navigated the site to design the building, walkways, and a field dedicated to an annual Light Festival as a fundraising event for supporting the development of the research.

The Tuscan Bean Soup

The Tuscan Bean Soup is an Italian Classic Soup, where beans and ham are the two main ingredients. My design is aimed to celebrate those two ingredients by showcasing all the steps from growing to cooking the beans and hanging the ham. The front elevation will have an opening at the height of the waist, so that customers could only see the series of actions up until they get handed the soup. As well as this opening, there will be two others, one showing the beans in the procedure of growing and another displaying the hanging hams. This will raise awareness of the process of soup making and therefore will change the way customers experience eating the soup.
